It was announced earlier today that Warner Bros has been pursuing the rights to Bleach. The multi-billiondollar film production company seems to be grappling onto any popular franchsie these days! Warners Bros seeks to americanize the highly succesful manga & anime Bleach into a live action movie to maximise profits from a pre-existing fanbase.

Bleach follows a teenage boy named Ichigo Kurosaki who is granted Shinigami (Death God) powers and has the ability to see souls and creatures known as hollows. In his training to become a full fledged Shinigami he encounters new enemies and secrets of his own family and those within Soul Society.

The main question manga & anime fans are asking is – Will it be a complete toss up like Dragonball Evolution? Sure it’s never good when a Japanese manga & anime is americanised but could they at least do it at a bad level where’s it tolerable? Warner Bros have also signed on to create live action movies of Death Note, Ninja Scroll & Akira. Director Peter Segal (Anger Managment, The Longest Yard and Get Smart) has signed onto the Bleach project.

It’s expected that Fox are going to make an announcment denouncing that the extremely well received show 24 will be cancelled. 24 follows each series as a day in real time in the life of Jack Bauer – A CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) Agent, who’s methods for getting information and the job done have raised a lot of controversy in the show’s storylines and with the audience.

The show has been the longest running Spy/Espionage yet and has been extremely well recieved since it first started back in 2001, although the current Season 8 has dropped in ratings rather quickly and alongside it’s high production costs Fox considers this cancel worthy. Fans will be glad to hear though that Kiefer Sutherland and the CTU Team have signed back on for one last film to tie things up and give 24 a well deserved and honoured ending.

I’ve felt the urge recently to explain to the public of how awesome 2010 is for films. So, I’ve constructed a list for you guys for the films still due for release this year which are worth going to see!

Let’s start off with one of the most anticipated sequels since The Dark Knight shall we?

Iron Man 2

That’s right folks. Stark is back after the magnificent first directed by Jon Favreau. After the crazy ending to Iron Man everyone was raising questions to if there’ll be a second? If so, who’ll be the villain? What about Nick Fury, where does he fit into all this in the special scene during the credits!? Iron Man 2 will face pressure from the press, government and the public about his Superhero alter ego and get into few fights! Mickey Roarke stars as the destructive Whiplash and as the poster shows, a possible hint to War Machine with Don Cheadle at the helm.

"Hi Tony!"

Clash Of The Titans

A remake of Ray Harryhausens classic! The trailer of the film can be described in only one word. Epic. Casting Sam Worthington as Zeus’ son Perseus, he’s thrown into an all out brawl with monsters and giant sea creatures content on crushing and smashing anything that moves. But here’s the kicker! It’s in 3D! This will be Sam Worthingons second 3D film since Avatar and his 3rd major title since Terminator: Salvation. The Clash will be epic.

"Release the Kraken!"

The Expendables

Remember when all those actions films were being made with the cheesy sayings and the huge amount of gore and explosions and you just wished you had all those actors in one film? Guess what, it came true. The Expendables is Sly Stallone’s new flick and he called in a huge cast to support it! We have Sly Stallone himself, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis and even a cameo from Schwarzenegger himself! The film bundles these actors together as an elite mercenary group set with the task of overthrowing a dictator in South America in one big mashup of explosions and gunfire.

"FREEZE!"

Tron Legacy

Oh yes! Tron is back and better than ever! The sequel to the 80′s classic was announced back in 2009 and has been the cause of many peoples trouser wetting since! But let’s face the part where our pants will be drenched – It’s in 3D. Now with Jeff Bridges leading the game (The bad guy from Iron Man, remember him?) aswell as it in 3D we can be guaranteed a great show and a damn good kick of nostalgia for those who remember Tron.

The Game Has Changed.

Toy Story 3

Hanks and Allen team up again to face another set of problems in Pixars huge selling film series Toy Story. Toy Story 3 will feature the voice talents of Michael Keaton, Whoopi Goldberg and Timothy Dalton. But will it be such as much of a success as people are hoping? Can Pixar pull out a decent plotline? All we know is that Andy is heading for college and the toys are left in a box in a day care centre. We’re just going to have to wait and see if Pixar can pull it off.

There's the gang we all love.

Now, obviously I can’t do a nice big detailed description of every big film coming out in 2010, so here are the special mentions for the films that didn’t make my list.

The A-Team – Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time – Jake Gyllenhaal

Inception – Leonardo DiCaprio

Green Hornet – Seth Rogen

Kick-Ass – Nicholas Cage

A Nigtmare On Elm Street – Jackie Earl Haley

Robin Hood – Russel Crowe

The Last Airbender – Noah Ringer, Dev Patel,

Paul – Simon Pegg, Nick Frost

All the films mentioned are the ones you want to be looking forward to and rushing off to your local cinema to see as soon as they are released!

Adventureland – Greg Mottolas 2009 film.

Adventureland follows the progression of of James Brennan, a smart and witty guy who everyone can connect to. James is plunged back into a hellhole after his parents lose their jobs and his dream summer holiday is dragged out behind a shed and shot square in the face. He’s faced with an old friend and a job in a crappy amusement park known as “Adventureland.” Oh the joy…

The film is a typical teen rom-com which is a major disappointment coming from the guy who came out with Superbad. The film employed a mediocre cast and an A Lister – Ryan Reynolds. The films main star who portrayed James Brennan was Jesse Eisenberg who is well known for his excentric role in the 2009 flick Zombieland. (His top two films have similar titles!?) and the incredibely awesome Bill Hader who played one of the crazy cops back in Superbad.

"This, is the Flighing Dutchman!"

So, with Ryan Reynolds playing a very small part in the film (He pops up now and again) people expected the film to have the great acting every film hopes for. It doesn’t. Reynolds monotonous acting along side Jessie Eisenbergs typical guy (as seen in Zombieland, let’s see something else next time Jessie!) really does put a nail in the coffin known as Adventureland.

A positive point to raise about the film was the 80′s feel. You had the old cars, the fashion, the crappy disco dancing and an awesome feature of Lou Reeds “Satellite Of Love.” But that isn’t enough to deem this film good. The film is advertised as a comedy yet hardly any comedy occurs in the film. (Or any which appeals to anyone sense of humor. I can imagine Greg Mottola writing the script wetting himself laughing then when someone else reads the script they’re crying of boredom.) I mean yeah, there are some jokes which make you laugh but they come from Bill Hader playing his succesful crazy and slightly weird character or the films debut nerd shouting “****ing sadists! I SAY ****ING SADISTS!” but other than the odd moment the comedy was dry and scabby.

So, to give you readers an overall of the film. With the poor acting and lack of comedy the film really is a disappointment from Greg Mottola and really could be improved. I mean it’s a typical rom-com where the guy meets girl, they argue then they meet up again and have a wonderful night of fun! As a film nerd, I’m getting bored of it! I’d much prefer to see Bill Hader hitting Jessie Eisenberg with a baseball bat than a typial rom-com story line, but maybe that’s just me?

To finish it off, Adventureland scores a magnificent 2/5 on my magnificent star scales.

The one film I have been anticipating since it’s announcment in 2009… a recreation of George A Romero’s classic motion picture “The Crazies”. Before I go on explaining why I dub this film a revolutionizing zombie flick, I will let out some of the plotline so spoiler alert guys! I also feel the need to find the words to describe the AWESOMENESS of this film and how it’s pulled off… to the review!

The film is set in a small farming town in Iowa. Just what you’d expect from a farming community, a place where everyone knows everyone and no problems are seen, apart from the odd meteor rock freak (Smallville reference. I had to). My surprise was how fast the film jumped into the contamination of “The Crazies”. The film opens with a farmer getting headshotted in the middle of a baseball game. Memories for the kids eh? What I loved about this film was it wasn’t all set at night like you get with most zombie films which gets old. You always think of daylight being safe and night being dangerous, but the film is based over four days featuring death, destruction and good ‘ole gore in the day as well as night. I also find with the zombie flicks you never have any explanation to why or where the infection comes from which is where this film excels! The hidden plot behind the survival storyline is the whole government cover up of a weapon gone wrong.

I feel all zombie films should have a checklist to include to make the film change-your-pants worthy… I’ve decided to introduce this list to my review so you guys who do enjoy the zombie/infection films out there can go through your favourites and decide whether they were that good compared to this list.

Daylight horror, as well as night time

Military involvement

Containment of the infection (or attempts…)

The cool guy turning bad/killing himself/dying

Big ass explosion

Molestation of a zombie (Stink Of Flesh anyone…?)

Reading this list only three films come to mind with several points from the checklist – The Crazies, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later. I might be missing films out, I may not, but they are the only films I can think of. Although people may argue, they are not zombies in The Crazies, but infected people. Still, the same is true of 28 Days but considered a zombie film and a fine one at that!

Back to the review… the films CGI is barely noticeable apart from the obvious explosions and effects (I don’t want to give away too much!) and the cinematography is just perfect. It gives the perfect survivalist impression to the viewer and emphasises the gore without making it over the top.

If I’m honest, although I don’t want to be… not many films can make me jump and make me want to curl up into a ball and cry from the obvious Crazy going to pop up behind someone and try ripping them apart but The Crazies did just that. The amount of effort and awesomeness put into this film really did pull off.

I was very stuck whether to choose 4 or 5 stars for the film, I went with 4 to be fair but, if I didn’t have these conflicting emotions that if I put it as a 5, so many other films will have to be too, I’d have rated it as high as I could. The Crazies is a film you cannot miss while it is in cinema, and if you do a pre-ordered DVD is necessary to enjoy such a pants-filling, stomach pounding awesome film.

To business! So, I shut the blinds, slammed the door, hit the light and placed the AvP: Requiem disc into my DVD player. I could accuse my negativity to this film because of my high expectations but should I be blamed because it refused to rise to the standard of any die-hard Alien and Predator fan?

Yes, I expected a very typical, cliché rural town being over-run by monsters and the newly returned guy becoming some form of underdog hero, but what I didn’t expect was the lack of necessary gore and Predators. I mean, they send three Predators for an initiation test, but only one to find a new species of alien!? I mean it was hard enough taking down the Predalien in Alien vs Predator for the PC! But this lone bad-ass Predator gets to take on a couple of dozen Aliens, The Predalien, the National Guard and our underdog.

Predalien vs Predator Showdown

So? What did I think of the movie? Apart from it being a over-clichéd, over-powered, over-filled-with-bad-acting crapfest I can’t totally shun it as the guys who pumped it out into the public tried very hard with it and were very enthusiastic with the project – but that doesn’t mean it’s a good film.

If they’d incorporated some form of general army theme like from the games, a lot more gore and a few more Predators then we’d all be changing our pants after the film. So I’m going to give this film a 3/5 stars for effort and effects. Despite it being the over-clichéd, over-powered, over-filled-with-bad-acting crapfest the film was enjoyable and although dissapointment lurked, I was satisfied with the sequel.

Let’s just hope if there’s a number 3, it’s got more gore and a lot more Predators.
