Nintendo are jumping on the 3D bandwagon and have announced yet another version of the DS, with the 3DS obviously allowing you to play upcoming DS games in 3-dimensions. The plus point of this though is you won’t have to wear the stupid glasses, and this is sure to avoid you getting funny looks from passers by as you cain some games at the bus stop.

A Nintendo press release states the Nintendo 3DS, which is a temporary name, is scheduled to be released in March 2011; plenty of time to save up then.

“Nintendo 3DS is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed ‘Nintendo DS series,’ whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009,” says the press release.

“[It] will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.”

Sony’s John Koller however can’t understand Nintendo’s latest decision, wondering if there is a market teenagers to be playing a 3D portable games system. He said “I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable. Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it’s an interesting move but one I’d like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”

Whilst on the subject of 3D, John Koller also said “There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D,” he said. “The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we’re going to concentrate our efforts there.”

I personally can’t wait to play Gran Turismo 5 in stunning 3D and HD! If it ever gets released…
